Advanced Media Skills

This half-day workshop is designed to complement the one-day Media Skills workshop. There will be a quick review of some media fundamentals so don’t be concerned if you didn’t attend the first workshop.

The focus of the rest of the course is a hypothetical scenario where you will work through a range of practical activities within realistic timeframes. You will have an opportunity to develop the outline of an integrated media strategy and present your approach to your colleagues for review and feedback.

Learning Outcomes

What will the session cover?

This course will include working on media materials needed for the scenario including:

  • using media releases to manage information flow
  • building and protecting reputation
  • developing productive media relations through managing presence on TV, radio, press and online
  • preparing for the planned interview and the ambush interview
  • dealing with the media in a crisis.

Eligibility

This course is available to all MOP(S) Act employees.

Cost of the Course

All courses offered as part of the Professional Development Program (PDP) under the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2016-2019 are provided free of charge. However, the costs of any travel by employees may be met from within your employing Senator or Member’s Electorate Support Budget.

Electorate employees of Senators and Members whose electorate offices are outside the greater metropolitan area of capital cities should check their entitlement to additional trips for training. Employees accessing these trips should clearly mark their Form 54: Travelling and/or Motor Vehicle Allowance Claim as being for attendance at PDP, to ensure that the costs are not debited against the Electorate Support Budget.

A minimum of four participants is required for each session. Participants are requested to register early to ensure a place in the session, as it is limited to 20.
