Work expenses, legislation and legislative instruments

The Acts of Parliament, related Regulations and Determinations of the Remuneration Tribunal that are listed below establish the framework of work expenses provided to current and former parliamentarians. Parliamentary Business Resources Act 2017

Provides for:

  • remuneration - including base salary and additional office holder’s salary, some superannuation arrangements, private-plated vehicles, telephone lines etc.
  • work expenses, allowances and other public resources to be provided (as prescribed by the regulations or determined by the Minister) where (except for insurance, legal assistance for Ministers and parliamentary injury compensation) it is for the dominant purpose of conducting parliamentary business.
  • compliance and enforcement measures, including repayment.
  • the role of the Remuneration Tribunal in determining remuneration and rates of allowances.
  • when remuneration and allowances commence and cease.

Parliamentary Business Resources Regulations 2017

Provides for travel expenses, travel allowances, work expenses, public resources (including office accommodation and equipment), insurance and legal assistance for Ministers schemes.
