MOP(S) Act employment

Parliamentarians, MOP(S) Act employees, MaPS, and the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA) all hold different responsibilities in relation to personal and electorate employees engaged under the MOP(S) Act.

The Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 provides for the employment of staff, by parliamentarians, on behalf of the Commonwealth. The terms and conditions of employment of staff are determined primarily by determinations made under this Act, the relevant Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement and the Fair Work Act 2009.

Employing parliamentarians and other authorised persons need to know their responsibilities and process when recruiting new staff. New MOP(S) Act employees need to ensure they provide all relevant information prior to beginning employment.

New employees need to understand their responsibilities under the MOP(S) Act. New employees will need to provide relevant information including signing and submitting their employment agreement, security clearance and any other relevant information before commencing employment.

Changes may occur during your employment such as moving locations or varying working hours. Your employing parliamentarian will discuss any possible changes with you.

Ceasing employment under the MOP(S) Act can occur for various reasons, including employee resignation, termination by the employing parliamentarian, or the employment is automatically terminated by the operation of the MOP(S) Act.
