Recruitment and establishing positions

MOP(S) Act employees can be employed on an ongoing, non-ongoing, or casual basis. Employees are employed against an electorate officer or personal employee position, or as relief staff. Salary classification and rates are outlined in the Enterprise Agreement and classification structures documents.

An electorate support budget (ESB) is provided to all parliamentarians to allow for the travel of electorate employees and the employment of relief electorate employees.

Recruiting the right people is key to establishing a well-functioning office. MOPS Support can assist.

A written employment agreement between the parliamentarian and MOP(S) Act employee is required and should be submitted to MaPS before the employee commences.

A parliamentarian may elect to commence ongoing and non-ongoing MOP(S) Act employees on a probation period. Any changes relating to the probation period needs to be emailed to the employee and MaPS Help Desk.

Ongoing and non-ongoing MOP(S) Act employees may need to complete the National Police History Check (NPHC) form when commencing employment.

Under the MOP(S) Act, parliamentarians cannot employ immediate family members. This means if a parliamentarian enters into an employment arrangement with an immediate family member, the employment will not be governed by the MOP(S) Act.
